
On April 24, a roundtable on the topic “In the Light of Zarifa Aliyeva: Women and Statehood,” dedicated to the 102nd anniversary of the birth of the outstanding ophthalmologist-scientist, Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, was held with the joint organization of the Presidium of ANAS, YAP (New Azerbaijan Party) Organization, Women’s Council, Departments of the Study of Turkic World Manuscripts and the Study of Turkic-language Manuscripts of the Institute of Manuscripts named after Mahammad Fuzuli of ANAS.
The event was attended by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, members of the Presidium of ANAS, as well as member of the Milli Majlis Ulviyya Agayeva, the Chairman of the Yasamal district organization of YAP, Bakhtiyar Nabiyev, employees of the Presidium of ANAS and the Institute of Manuscripts, and media representatives.
Before the event, the participants viewed an exhibition dedicated to prominent scientist Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, prepared by the Institute of Manuscripts.
The event was opened with an introductory speech by the President of ANAS, Academician Isa Habibbeyli, who said that the 102nd anniversary of the birth of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, who made significant contributions to the development of Azerbaijani science, healthcare, and public thought, is marked with a series of events at the Academy’s scientific institutions and organizations. He noted that her rich heritage is presented once again to our society and the new generation. The academician added that today’s event, initiated by the Institute of Manuscripts named after Muhammad Fuzuli, is held in a different format, with manuscripts dating from the 12th to the 17th centuries, which are preserved at the Institute of Manuscripts and relate to the field of medicine to which Academician Zarifa Aliyeva dedicated her life.
The President of ANAS underlined that the historical contributions of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva to the field of ophthalmology were recognized and highly valued not only in our country but also across the former Soviet Union and worldwide, adding that the prominent scientist was one of the leading figures in ophthalmology in the USSR and in Azerbaijan was the founder of ophthalmology.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli mentioned that several scientific directions and innovations are associated with the name of the prominent scientist, who applied practical innovations that were warmly received by everyone.
“The prevention and treatment methods for trachoma in Azerbaijan are associated with the name of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva. The medical teams were organized at the initiative of Academician Zarifa Aliyeva who were struggling with trachoma in Baku and the regions. Additionally, Zarifa Aliyeva took significant measures against occupational eye diseases, establishing laboratories in several industrial institutions where occupational diseases were examined and treated on-site”-said the President of ANAS.
He mentioned that Academician Zarifa Aliyeva expanded her rich work in the field of medicine through her scientific research and that at her initiative, a laboratory was established at the Institute of Physiology to study occupational pathology of the organs of vision, where extensive scientific research was conducted, and highly qualified ophthalmologists were trained. The head of ANAS emphasized that the distinguished ophthalmologist-scientist, Academician Zarifa Aliyeva, was awarded the M.I. Averbakh Prize of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences for her scientific work in this field, demonstrating to the world the strength and intellect of Azerbaijani women.
Academician Isa Habibbeyli said that the National Ophthalmology Center, lyceum, and several streets are named after outstanding ophthalmologist-scientist, Academician Zarifa Aliyeva.
“Her character, humanity, personality, life, and work are an example for everyone, and her ideas and the traditions she established in science continue to live today, contributing to the development of Azerbaijani science,” -he added.
In his speech, Academician Teymur Karimli, Director of the Institute of Manuscripts named after Muhammad Fuzuli spoke about scientific works of well-known Azerbaijani ophthalmologist Zarifa Aliyeva, her significant contributions and great achievements.
Providing information about the life and valuable contributions of the distinguished scientist Zarifa Aliyeva, Academician Irada Huseynova, Vice-President of ANAS said that the scientist laid the foundation of the national ophthalmology scientific school and had been purposefully engaged in the occupational pathology of the organs of vision since 1968. She defended her doctoral dissertation on the topic “The State of the Visual Organs of Workers in chemical industry of Azerbaijan” in 1976 in Moscow at the renowned Scientific Research Institute of Eye Diseases named after M. Helmholtz, a prestigious scientific center.
The Academic-secretary of ANAS, Academician Arif Hashimov, Member of Parliament Ulviyya Agayeva, Chairman of the Yasamal District Organization of YAP Bakhtiyar Nabiyev, and Head of the Department for the Study of Turkic World Manuscripts at the Institute of Manuscripts named after Muhammad Fuzuli of ANAS, Doctor of Philological Sciences and Associate Professor Aygul Hajiyeva also delivered speeches at the event. They also underlined that with her high culture, kindness, elegance, and brilliant intellect, prominent Academician Zarifa Aliyeva won the love of everyone.
